Des Excuses

This project details a personal exploration of reading a French text, Moi Tituba, Sorciere by Maryse Conde and its English translation, I TitubaBlack Witch of Salem. Through a feminist and postcolonial reading of the joint texts, I came to discover biased aspects of my own readership that informed the way I intially approached them. Since the original French work was written by a Guadelopean woman of color, there was no way I could see the white male translator, Richard Philcox, doing her work justice. However, the more I came to familiarize myself with these two individuals and the creative works they produced, the more I came to change the way I thought about translating and reading as a whole. Des Excuses details that journey.
